OPERN WAGEN presents: The Creation of Adam and Eve – The Swabian Creation (Open-Air)

This August, OPERN WAGEN brings “Adam & Eva’s Creation – The Swabian Creation,” a humorous 18th-century Swabian chamber opera, to four special open-air venues in Baden-Württemberg. A summer evening under the open sky. A special location becomes a stage. People sit on beer benches, bring their own chairs, or picnic in a convivial atmosphere—and experience opera up close, directly, and without any sense of intimidation. “The Creation of Adam & Eve” is a Swabian chamber opera by Sebastian Sailer and Meingosus Gaelle that tells the story of creation with plenty of humor and enthusiasm: from paradise to the expulsion—but not in a reverent or heavy-handed way, rather comically, realistically, and delightfully Swabian. Everyday worries, gender roles, and the urge for freedom and self-determination shine through so poignantly in Martin Butler’s production that you realize: This may be from the 18th century—but it feels surprisingly relevant today. Musically, the audience is transported back to the Swabian world of the Classical era: with historical instruments and a sound that is at once delicate, surprising, and full of atmosphere. The result is a production that doesn’t bring opera “into the house”—but takes it to where people come together: at various locations, outdoors, right in the midst of life.
