With the Royal Academy of Music founded in 1719, Georg Friedrich Händel established a successful entrepreneurial foundation for his opera career in London, at least in the medium term. Now it was essential to compose one opera success after another for the King’s Theatre at Haymarket, and Händel's very first opera for the Academy was a complete success: With tragic love stories, surprising twists, and virtuosic arias, Radamisto contained everything that made the hearts of opera lovers beat faster at that time. Premiering in the spring of 1720, the work was revived later that same year, with the title role taken over by a singer who had just arrived in England: the star castrato Senesino. For him, Händel enriched the score with additional arias. The same happened when the two prima donnas Faustina Bordoni and Francesca Cuzzoni performed in this opera during later performances. Thus, the four versions of Radamisto are an almost inexhaustible reservoir of brilliant arias – one can look forward to the selection that Benjamin Bayl and the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra will bring to the Theater an der Wien.
