Bolschoi Don Cossacks

The famous men's choir Bolschoi Don Kosaken is the only one that consists exclusively of opera soloists. After the illness of Serge Jaroff, Prof. Petja Houdjakov took over some members of the Don Kosaken Choir (Wanja Hlipka, Sadko Krastev, Bogumil Manov, Michael Minsky, among others) in the 1979/80 season and built a new choir. To distinguish the ensemble from some small, often amateurish groups, it was named "bolschoi" (=big). This not only refers to the size of the choir, which can have up to 60 artists, but also to the voices, the dancers, and the musicians, who are all "bolschoi."
