Following the spectacular *A Midsummer Night’s Dream* in the summer of 2024, director Ekat Cordes and his team present Büchner’s fairy-tale comedy *Leonce and Lena* this year as a love story against their will, filled with heartbreak, Italian flair, and music.
Are we in the distant past or the near future? In director and writer Ekat Cordes’ adaptation, Leonce and Lena are two flagship android models in a multigalactic world, while the empires of Popo and Pipi are two multitech corporations whose rulers, Queen Petra and King Peter, are planning a merger. Their goal: even more profit and power. What gets in the way in this smart new world are feelings and deep thoughts. Yet that is precisely what keeps stalling the merger plans, because love keeps getting in the way.
Ekat Cordes plays with Büchner’s cosmos with relish and unhesitatingly transposes his comedy “Leonce and Lena” into the universe. As in Büchner’s work, the escape to Italy—or rather, to the planet Italo—seems to be the solution to all problems.
With this year’s open-air production, we’ll whisk you away to galactic worlds. Look forward to “La Dolce Vita” with a dash of “Star Trek” and “Barbarella.”
