The Madrid-born, Brooklyn-based pianist Marta Sanchez describes playing solo piano as a "long-standing fear." After acclaimed ensemble albums, such as those with Ambrose Akinmusire or in a trio with Chris Tordini and Savannah Harris, her solo album "For The Space You Left" was released this year. "Creating a solo project felt like the most direct way to confront this fear – and to grow through it," she explains. The pieces, created during a McDowell residency in a snow-covered cabin and refined in pandemic isolation, are played on a (mostly) subtly prepared piano, captivating with disturbingly cozy rhythms and (dis)harmony, which resonate in song titles like "Frost Bloom" or "Echolord."
