The garden of Villa Ufer is perfectly suited for a cheerful Sunday matinee. An event by the Association for Popular Education and Youth Welfare in cooperation with the Verbandsgemeinde Landau-Land.
Elizabeth von Arnim (1866-1941) should not be confused with the nearly 80 years older Bettina, although both have much in common as self-determined, unconventional women. Born in Australia, Elizabeth grew up in England. She developed an early passion for gardens and parks and for living out her personal freedom. This was significantly curtailed by her marriage to Henning Graf von Arnim-Schlagenthin. Fortunately, there was the overgrown Arnimsche estate Nassenheide near Stettin, which she was able to transform into a green paradise where she spent her happiest years with her six children. This inspired her first novel "Elizabeth and Her Garden" (1889). It was and still is a great success. About twenty more books followed.
They often deal with breaking conventions and a blissful happiness that requires nothing more than open senses and an open heart.
Less harmonious was her relationship with men, whom she did not want to be dominated by despite affection and love. The ensemble of the VVJ will read from this deliciously ironic work in a matinee in the garden of Villa Ufer, An 44, No. 31, in Landau on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at 11 a.m.
Michael Letzel will accompany on the accordion.
