SCHOOL EVENT
High – Someone always has something
Play about intoxication and addiction
Director: Rob Vriens
Concept and Performance: Jonathan Schyns, Susanne Schyns
Theaterhaus Ensemble Frankfurt
At 13 the first joint. At 15 party drugs. At 17 benzodiazepines – then opiates. A “typical” drug career?
The production “High” engages deeply with consumption, abuse, and society's handling of medications – particularly pain and sedatives among young people. It raises questions of responsibility, repression, and the thin lines between medical aid and addiction.
“Was there a moment when you thought: Damn, I’m addicted?” “That thought never really came clear. It was a big mix of everything: intensifying feelings and controlling them at the same time. Pushing feelings away. Feeling safe. Having a tool. It was all of that.”
Developed from personal experiences, the story transforms on stage into an intense artistic duet between mother and son – spoken, sung, and danced. With “High”, they aim to open the dialogue: with young people, with parents, with society. About the mechanisms of intoxication and addiction – and how easily consumption can turn into a loss of control.
