When Giuseppe Verdi performed his Requiem at the Church of San Marco in Milan on May 22, 1874, it was a cultural event. At the height of his career, the 60-year-old composer received international acclaim for it. However, it was never the opera composer's intention to compose a complete Requiem. Three years earlier, he had referred to it as a "temptation that, like so many others, would pass." In 1871, he was still planning to write a collaborative Requiem in honor of the deceased composer Gioacchino Rossini along with twelve other notable composers. Verdi had contributed his part, but the others had not. However, when the prominent Italian poet and writer Alessandro Manzoni died two years later, Verdi immediately set to work and created a full-length Requiem that lasts around one and a half hours.
Admission costs 25 euros and reduced price 10 euros. Tickets can be purchased on Reservix and at the Tourist Information in Speyer.
