Costume Tour: Miss Elise—Teacher at the Village School in 1850

In this fascinating costumed tour, museum guide Barbara Fricker-Tuzlu shows just how different school and children’s lives were around 1850. It was such a different life that we’re about to experience on this journey through time. 1850, in a village somewhere in the countryside: There’s no electricity here yet, and even running water is a rarity in most households. The walk to school—often a long one—is a daily struggle; “parent taxis” are still a long way off. And then there’s the school itself! Museum guide Barbara Fricker-Tuzlu, playing the role of “Miss Elise,” tells us exactly what it was like in our costumed tour “Miss Elise—Teacher at the Village School in 1850.” First, we’ll explore our “village school” together—a historic classroom from 1850. We’ll also delve into Fräulein Elise’s daily life: as the daughter of a middle-class family from the city, she received a higher education, unlike many other girls and women of the time. But she is only allowed to be a teacher until she gets married. Why is that? Find out during the tour. The costumed tour lasts about 60 minutes and is included in the admission price.
