Foto-Ausstellung: Raus aus dem Korsett!

The photo exhibition conceived by Wissener eigenART in kulturWERKwissen includes about 60 exhibits and primarily presents photographs from the Kreisarchiv Altenkirchen and the Ullstein Bildarchiv Berlin. It comparably highlights the conservatively rooted region of Westerwald against the accelerated urban life that verges on excess. The exposition attempts to paint a multifaceted picture of the "New Woman" of the 1920s in the tension between hedonistic luxury and oppressive poverty during the brief bright period between the First World War and the Nazi dictatorship, creating a photographic balance between feminist self-determination and traditional role understanding. The initiators have shown a keen eye in selecting the presented photographs; visitors can admire a series of impressive works from legendary photographers of that time, such as Andre Kertesz, Martin Munkacsi, August Sander, Robert Sennecke, and Yva (Else Ernestine Neuländer-Simon), who was murdered in the extermination camp Majdanek in 1942.

Visitors gain additional insights through informative text panels, an ongoing presentation of historically significant women of the 1920s in politics, art, and science, as well as the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of the "Roaring Twenties" through audio files corresponding to selected photographs.

The exhibition will be opened as part of the event "This is not a Threepenny Opera" on July 3 at 7 p.m.

With free admission (donations welcome), the exhibition will be open from July 4 to 26, 2026, on Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as by appointment* (*please register via email at ausstellung@kulturwerk-wissen.de).
