How was calculation, writing, and learning done before computers, calculators, and smartphones became part of our everyday lives? Answers to this question can be found in the new special exhibition “Calculating and Writing in the Last Century,” which will be on display from July 1 to October 31, 2026, at the Tourist Information Maikammer.
The exhibition was created in close collaboration between the members of Club Sellemols and office machine mechanic Paul Kruppenbacher from Kirrweiler. As a long-standing expert in historical office and typewriting machines, Paul Kruppenbacher contributed not only numerous extraordinary exhibits from his collection but also his extensive expertise to the conception of the exhibition. Together with the members of Club Sellemols, a diverse presentation has emerged that impressively documents the development of writing and calculating techniques as well as the school life of bygone times.
Among the special exhibits are a Triumph Matura 30 typewriter from the years 1960 to 1962, a Resulta adding machine from 1937, the legendary Curta calculating machine from 1947, and historical calculating machines from the brands Mercedes and Thales. Various typewriters, including an AEG Mignon pointer typewriter from 1910, a Corona, and a Klein-Adler from the 1920s, as well as a children's typewriter Famos, impressively showcase the evolution of writing technology.
The exhibition is complemented by other interesting historical artifacts such as historical pencil sharpeners, a Picht Braille typewriter from 1899, an old school desk, ink wells, and various writing utensils. Together, the exhibit pieces provide a vivid picture of how schools, administration, and office work functioned in the last century and the changes that writing and calculating techniques have undergone over the decades.
The exhibition is aimed at technology and history enthusiasts as well as families, school classes, and anyone who wishes to revive memories of their own school or professional time. It connects the history of technology with personal memories and makes the development of everyday work and learning aids vividly experienceable.
The exhibition will be on display from July 1 to October 31, 2026, at the Tourist Information Maikammer.
