“Overcoming Time”
Following last year’s successful debut, the “Markgräflerland Chamber Music Festival” is back for its second edition. From July 17 to 24, 2026, concerts and events will take place throughout the region under the inspiring theme “Timeless—The Sound of the Moment.”
The festival will culminate with a concert on July 24 at St. Martin’s Church in Müllheim, where we will encounter three composers from different eras who,
in their own distinct ways, have transcended the boundaries of time through their works: Through strength and willpower, through the dissolution of temporal boundaries, and through the power of memory.
In Beethoven’s String Trio in C minor, we encounter a young composer who breaks with tradition and shapes time with unprecedented energy. The key of C minor has always been a symbol of Beethoven’s heroic struggle. It is no longer gallant light music, but music full of tension, intensity, and passionate willpower. A work that has lost none of its explosive power to this day.
Next, Debussy’s Sonata for Violin and Piano opens up a space where time loses its clear contours. The music dissolves fixed structures and gives rise to timbres that capture fleeting moments in quiet duration. Debussy composed his sonata in the final years of his life, in the midst of World War I—it appears as a quiet, timeless counterpoint to the world’s turmoil.
After the intermission, Dvořák’s Piano Quintet in A major will be performed, a work that combines temporality and timelessness in a way all its own. Here, personal melancholy, dance-like lightness, and folk-music inspiration come together to form music of great warmth and expansiveness. The past becomes a source of the present: memories of home, of dance and song, blend with moments of pure joy of life. Especially in the famous “Dumka” movement, the music seems to wander between eras—between stillness and movement, between nostalgia and a new beginning.
