Stronger Together—The Early Women's Associations of Heilbronn

The women of Heilbronn’s associations not only carried out social projects, but also gained experience in organizing, networking, and presenting themselves confidently in public within a male-dominated society. The women of Heilbronn’s associations not only carried out social projects, but also gained experience in organizing, networking, and presenting themselves confidently in public within a male-dominated society. The lecture honors the commitment of the early women of Heilbronn’s associations and uses this local example to show that women’s associations as a whole played a key role in ensuring that, by November 1918, the introduction of the right to vote and stand for election for women had become inevitable. Annette Geisler, born in 1955 in southern Baden, first moved to Stuttgart for her studies and then to Heilbronn in 1980. For 40 years, she worked at the Heilbronn City Archives as a librarian and as an editor for the archives’ diverse publications. A major focus of her interest has been—and continues to be—on the one hand, the everyday history of Heilbronn in all its facets, and on the other hand, the history of women in Heilbronn. She was also active as a city tour guide covering these topics.
