Oriol Marès, clarinet, bass clarinet | Talal Fayad – oud, electric oud | Thodoris Ziarkas – double bass | Lucas Zegrí – percussion
When Arabic melodies, Latin American rhythms, and jazz improvisations come together, the unique sound of the Oriol Marès & Talal Fayad Quartet is born. Catalan clarinetist Oriol Marès and Syrian oud virtuoso Talal Fayad, together with Lucas Zegrí (percussion) and Thodoris Ziarkas (double bass), create a musical mosaic full of color, energy, and emotion. Their sound bridges cultures—inspired by Anouar Brahem and Paquito D’Rivera—and tells stories of encounters, migration, and freedom. Formed in Utrecht and honed on stages such as the Grachtenfestival and the Utrecht International Chamber Music Festival, the quartet released its debut album, *Estuarium*, in Girona in 2024. Internationally acclaimed—including a No. 24 ranking on the World Music Charts Europe—this music captivates with its depth, lightness, and irresistible joy of playing. Music that builds bridges—poetic, spirited, and boundless.
What does “Mediterranean” mean today? Is it a place, a feeling—or a sound? With their acclaimed debut album *Estuarium*, the quartet embarks on this fascinating musical quest, transporting listeners into a world of sound full of poetry, energy, and depth. Nine original compositions blend into an organic whole that is both personal and universal. At times melancholic and contemplative, at other times rhythmically pulsating and full of joie de vivre—their music always remains immediately accessible and emotionally moving.
