The Steinfeld Monastery is one of the oldest and formerly most powerful monasteries in the Eifel region. The monastery was first mentioned in documents in the year 1121. To this day, the basilica of the monastery is a pilgrimage site where an ancient custom is still practiced. We will learn about this tradition during our hike.
First, you will hike through the idyllic valley of the Kuttenbach. The landscape becomes increasingly open until we reach the Sistig Heath. Here, we are greeted by a unique landscape of rough, nutrient-poor grasslands rich in rare plants and animals. In geography and plant sciences, heath refers to open, nutrient-poor areas predominantly covered by shrubs, grasses, and specific plants. Despite the poor soils and open landscape, heaths are home to a high diversity of species. Among them are orchids, arnica, cotton grasses, and the rare gentian. To conclude the hike, we will visit the basilica and the monastery garden with its labyrinth made up of 2000 beech trees and a diameter of 25 meters.
The circular hike is approximately 14 km long.
As we are partially on rooted hiking paths, the hike is not suitable for strollers.
