Picture and storytelling theater

The Kamishibai – literally translated as "paper theater" (kami = paper, shibai = theater) – originates from Japan. The picture theater or "storytelling theater" has a long tradition here and is a special form of storytelling.
It consists of picture cards that illustrate the individual scenes of a story. The picture cards are presented in a stage-like frame. Throughout the narrated story, one picture after another is shown. The standing pictures can be viewed individually in peace. Meanwhile, a person tells the story. The focus is on the pictorial representation of the core of the spoken words. The narrator stands beside the frame and addresses the audience directly. Through the picture cards, they engage in conversation, and the audience is actively involved in the event.
Using the Kamishibai to tell stories is highly valuable for children's development. The illustrated stories stimulate creativity and imagination and contribute to a wide vocabulary. While television and movies confront children with rapid sequences of images, during "theater without electricity," they have enough time to look closely and immerse themselves in the events of a story.
The Kamishibai is used for creative language and reading promotion in crèches, kindergartens, or schools. It helps to learn holistically, narrate with visual support, develop one's own imagination and personality, as well as structure and visualize content, and enhances concentration and communication skills.
