Pentecost celebrates the sending of the Holy Spirit. It is observed on the 50th day of the Easter season, which is 49 days after Easter Sunday. In the New Testament, the Book of Acts recounts that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and disciples while they were gathered in Jerusalem for the Jewish festival of Shavuot. This date is also understood in Christian tradition as the founding of the Church.
