TOURDATA

Neuklostergasse 1, 2700 Wiener Neustadt

The Neukloster Monastery in Wiener Neustadt, founded in 1444 by Emperor Frederick III, has been part of the Heiligenkreuz Monastery since 1882. Today, it is not only a vibrant priory with seven monks but also a flourishing parish rich in history and art.

Library & Refectory
The refectory and the magnificent baroque library represent a unique art-historical ensemble. The frescoes by Johann Baptist Wenzel Bergl are almost completely preserved. The library has been open to the public only since 2019.

Art and Curiosity Cabinet
The remarkable art and curiosity cabinet of the monastery showcases art and sacred objects that reflect a miniature world. The collection includes not only lavish cabinet objects but also unique mementos of historical events. It comprises approximately 4,700 individual pieces, including 1,000 cabinet objects, 200 paintings, and 3,500 stones and shells. The majority of the collection was acquired during the monastery's heyday between 1740 and 1801.

Tomb of Eleonore
The Neukloster Monastery also houses the tomb of Empress Eleonore of Portugal, the mother of Maximilian I. It is attributed to the workshop of Gerhaert van Leyden and captivates with its liveliness.
