Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day Lent in the Western Church. The term Ash Wednesday comes from the custom of blessing the ashes from the burning of the previous year's palm branches during the Ash Wednesday service and marking the faithful with a cross made from these ashes. Since the Sundays of Lent are not considered fasting days, the total duration amounts to 46 days, from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday.
