In the national park, trees are allowed to grow old and die. Even in areas that have been used for centuries, an increasing "wildness" can be observed since the area was placed under protection; the proportion of dead wood is rising sharply, and every dead trunk becomes a new "living space."
Mushroom expert Gabriele Kovacs from the Austrian Mycological Society will inform you about the role of fungi in the ecosystem as well as their remarkable biology, and she will introduce you to the great diversity of mushrooms – from deadwood inhabitants that can even dismantle the mightiest tree giants to inconspicuous but delicious edible mushrooms.
