Thomas Bernhard's novel centers around a narrator who observes an "artistic evening gathering" in Vienna's Gentzgasse from the distance of his armchair, dissecting it with malicious precision. The assembled crowd is waiting for the anticipated arrival of a Burgtheater actor; moreover, most of the people in this gathering are connected to each other because their friend Joana, who had taken her own life, was laid to rest that afternoon in the village of Kilb.
Thomas Bernhard's famous prose is brought to life in a recitative manner, while the musicians of Franui, among others, will perform a specialty that has made them well-known: the celebration of funeral marches and funeral music.
