Work on the Csárdásfürstin began as early as 1914, but after the outbreak of World War I, the piece was set aside for some time. The final work reflects the "Great War" and the impending end of the monarchy in various ways. Director Johannes Erath poses the question in his production: "Why do we still need theater when the world seems to be sinking? Why do we only realize the value of things when we have lost them? Is it possible to create a theater evening that enchants every soul in the audience?"
