Being a girl!?

What currently moves girls* and what role models are passed down to us from the past? Contemporary art often addresses images of girls in socially motivated themes: coming of age, self-optimization trends – frequently in interaction with social media – fluid genders, themes of diversity, interculturality, and inclusion. Alongside early representations and images of saints, female children and adolescents appear across many eras as models for artists or as expressions of blossoming life in conflict with transience. In nine thematic circles, the exhibition navigates through several temporal milestones towards the era of digital transformation. Through over 120 exhibits by international artists, the exhibition attempts to analyze and deconstruct the current situation by referencing the modes of representation from earlier times. By taking initiative, girls show the world who they really are.
