Upper Austria School Museum

The OÖ School Museum in Bad Leonfelden has been a key destination for exploring the Upper Austrian museum landscape since its opening in 1988. It is housed in what is likely the oldest preserved former school building in Upper Austria. Built as "DOMUS DISCIPLINAE" (House of Education) in 1577, it was used as a school until 1850. Visiting the School Museum in Bad Leonfelden means: breathing in the school atmosphere from over five centuries, learning about the history of "lower education" in Austria, reflecting on how far teaching and education have improved, recalling memories of one's own school days, and taking an exciting trip to a remarkable border region, 27 km north of Linz.

Educational offerings include guided tours for school classes and adult groups led by knowledgeable cultural mediators, with thematic focuses for tours available upon request, such as education during the Nazi era and the history of the school. Historical school lessons for school classes and adult groups, a sparkling wine reception followed by a guided tour for family and corporate celebrations, and audio guides in German, English, and Czech for individual visitors are also available. Visitors can write with a stylus on slate boards as in former times and watch silent films from days gone by.

The museum is open every Tuesday, Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM (last admission at 4:45 PM!). Guided tours are at 2:30 PM (except on Tuesdays).
