That the waltz-drunk "Duidu, Duidu" and its relaxed counterpart "Dudidubidu" are actually just a stone's throw away from each other, not much more than "a warm embracing dance away" – this has been clear to the masters of Mnozil Brass for ages. For more than thirty years, the seven virtuosos have effortlessly zigzagged between Johann Strauss and Frank Sinatra, between Shostakovich and Prince, or passionately from Schubert to their chosen relatives from Queen. They are equally unconcerned by the solemn grandeur of one side as they are by the supposed banality of the other. But Strauss – whom Brahms, Wagner, and Verdi, as well as the craftsmen and girls from the suburbs (and even a Gershwin) fervently admired – was the forefather of the nonchalant frolicking between genres. Strauss was the first to produce hits by the dozen, he hired an arranger to work faster, and he understood that he could reproduce his sound worldwide with his brothers.
