The Tartuffe - Burgtheater Vienna

In Molière's comedy, Tartuffe pretends to be the embodiment of piety and thereby gains the favor of Orgon, who lives with his family in middle-class circumstances. Orgon not only takes Tartuffe into his home, offering him lodging and food, but also naively entrusts him with his possessions, his secrets, and his daughter Mariane, who is actually in love with Valère. Misunderstanding and distrust towards Tartuffe spread within the family until Orgon's wife Elmire finally exposes the fraud.

Barbara Frey examines the mechanisms of manipulation in her production and reveals the depths of a society that seems to know "the good" very well.
