ABOUT THE CONCERT
It has been 30 years since enthusiastic musicians came together in Linz to form an orchestra that quickly became one of the most distinctive voices in Early Music – the L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra. Orchestra founder and conductor Michi Gaigg has developed an incredibly colorful, individual, and sonorous signature with her L’Orfeo, marked by dedication and temperament. In her final season, Johann Sebastian Bach will be prominently featured. With four of the total “six concerts avec plusieurs instruments,” a “Bachian Utopia” will be created in Raiding: for such innovative and challenging virtuosity was what Bach demanded from his musicians. The story of the Brandenburg Concertos begins in 1721. At that time, Bach was the court chapel master in Köthen and was contemplating a career change, which is why we can understand his manuscript, dedicated to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg, as a kind of application letter, as he maintained a high-caliber court orchestra. Whether the Margrave ever acknowledged or appreciated the compositions is not recorded. Until 1850, the six concertos lay unused in the count's library, and it was not until the 20th century that they rose to become a world hit in classical music.
