Essentially, Don Pasquale is an immense unsympathetic character. He is so rich and at the same time so miserly that everything in life annoys him, or worse: bores him. However, the fact that his nephew (and designated heir) Ernesto wants to marry beneath his station does awaken Pasquale's spirits. Even as a staunch bachelor, he decides to take a young bride and have children, just to avoid leaving anything to Ernesto. However, he has not counted on his nephew and his beloved Norina, who immediately conspire together with the dubious doctor Malatesta, ruthlessly putting Ernesto's love at risk.

In the seemingly endless operatic oeuvre of Gaetano Donizetti, Don Pasquale is a brilliant example of the sparkling yet double-edged humor of the composer, as well as a pure bel canto opera in its essence. For the first time, comedy specialist Matthias Rippert will direct the opera.
