Tonight, Miss

Walter Kaufmann (1907–1984) belongs to the generation of composers who were displaced by the National Socialists and are finally being rediscovered, which has long been overdue. Kaufmann was from Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) and studied in Prague and Berlin, among others, with Franz Schreker. He was as successful as a composer as he was as a conductor and musicologist. In 1934, he traveled to India to conduct music ethnological studies but did not return due to the dire political developments in his homeland. Instead, he played an active role in Indian musical life by working as a radio editor, significantly contributing to the dissemination of Western classical music, and as a film music composer, he musically accompanied the beginnings of the Bollywood era.

The Linz State Theatre has now received the opportunity to premiere Kaufmann's previously unperformed operetta "Heute Nacht Fräulein," which exists only in a piano version. So look forward to an entertaining story about a self-assured hat seller, her morally strict boss, and a sad prince, where you can experience the lively qualities of Kaufmann's music.
