The Tower of Gold

On the banks of the Guadalquivir stands the landmark of Seville, the twelve-sided "Torre del Oro" (Golden Tower). For many centuries, the harbor in front of the Torre del Oro was the starting point for Spanish galleons sailing to South America, returning to Seville laden with treasures of gold. In their program named after this landmark, L'Arpeggiata embarks on a musical journey between the Old and the New World. The starting point is the music of the Sevillian composer Alonso Mudarra, a master of the 16th century. Additionally, the "living Baroque" is explored in the traditional music of South America, where Baroque instruments and melodies are still part of the musical culture today. Spanish and South American Jácaras, Fandangos, Folías, Canarios, and Chaconas, Venezuelan Joropos and Pájarillos are in dialogue with works by Alonso Mudarra, Santiago de Murcia, Lucas Ruiz de Ribayaz, Diego Pisador, and traditional music from Spain and South America.
