Child murderer, avenger, thief – among the female figures of ancient mythology, Medea is one of those who has faced the most rejection and condemnation over the millennia. The Colchian princess sacrifices almost everything for her love for the Greek Jason: she must leave both her family and homeland when she helps him steal the golden fleece. During their long flight through the Mediterranean, two children are born. In Corinth, where the family is granted asylum, Jason leaves Medea for his youthful love. Deeply hurt, Medea then kills her own children. After the Baroque opera typically portrayed Medea as a raging fury, around 1820, Franz Grillparzer took her side in his trilogy "The Golden Fleece," and by the mid-20th century, cultural history began to take a different view of the previously vilified figure: it was pointed out that her story had always been told from a male perspective, in which a figure that naturally disrupts the masculine world was depicted with inherent prejudices. Together with conductor Benjamin Bayl, director Corinna von Rad delves into the myth and asks how a Medea story might look in 2026. Based on the numerous – predominantly Baroque – musical settings and theatrical adaptations of the material, an evening is created that also addresses current societal developments.

In Italian, French, and German with German and English surtitles.
