COMPOSITION

His works bear titles like Niche Music with Knock Spirits, Butter and Fish, Tearjerkers, or Fat Finger Error – and indeed, Gordon Kampe writes music that is unparalleled in its wit and relevance. Yet, despite all the coolness, the self-proclaimed opera fan is by no means afraid of expressing strong emotions: This is evidenced not only by his grand opera Dogville (2023) but also by numerous stage works aimed at children and young people. In December 2025, the family opera I Am Vincent! and I Am Not Afraid will have its world premiere at the MusikTheater an der Wien. Since 2017, Gordon Kampe, who studied under Hans-Joachim Hespos, Adriana Hölszky, and Nicolaus A. Huber, has been a professor of composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg and will now work with students in Vienna for the first time.

STEFAN HERHEIM

DIRECTING

His productions captivate, enchant – and polarize: Stefan Herheim is among the most important directors of our time and was awarded the Austrian Music Theatre Prize in 2024 for the opening premiere of his tenure here (The Cunning Little Vixen). Since 2018, he has been a professor of directing at the Opera Academy in Oslo, where he shares his knowledge and experience with students. Now, he will also work with singing students from our partner universities in a masterclass, allowing them to look over his shoulder.
