In the Viennese Classical period, the sonata became the most important genre of instrumental music and found various forms of expression in the compositions of Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. Haydn initially composed his two-movement sonata in E-flat major for violin and piano, later revising it into a piano trio. The biblical title "Jacob's Dream" refers to the second movement, in which the violin ascends to ethereal heights like on a ladder to heaven. Beethoven's "Kreutzer" Sonata, composed nearly ten years later, interprets the genre as a furious virtuoso piece – tendencies that are also audible in his dramatic Sonata No. 7 in C minor. As the third in the group, Mozart complements the program with his expressive variations on the French song Au bord d’une fontaine.
