Musica Caesarea: Vienna Meets Passau

Antonio Caldara was probably the most important composer at the imperial court during the time of Charles VI. Some of his overtures to oratorios were published in string arrangements as symphonies – expressive, masterful in composition, atmospheric, and virtuosic. They were extremely popular in Vienna and continued to be performed long after Caldara's death. At the Passau court of the Prince-Bishop Count Lamberg, who was born in Steyr, Benedikt Anton Aufschnaiter worked. His "Dulcis fidium harmonia" is among the most astonishing and sonorous works of the Baroque period. The intricate and colorful string sonatas are each dedicated to a saint.
