The Death of Orpheus - Music Theater at the Vienna

Where Claudio Monteverdi's L’Orfeo ends, Stefano Landi's La morte d’Orfeo begins: The gifted singer Orfeo has unsuccessfully tried to rescue his wife Euridice from the underworld, and now he renounces all worldly pleasures to dedicate his life to despair. This prompts the god of wine to take action, who has Orfeo killed on the spot. But this marks the beginning of a new drama, at least for the gods and muses: Should the deceased hero ascend gloriously to Olympus or would it be better for him to be reunited with Euridice in Hades? Stefano Landi's La morte d’Orfeo, premiered in Rome in 1619, is indeed influenced in its musical language by Monteverdi and also incorporates elaborate madrigal choruses, but it captivates further with Landi's own vision of gripping music theater: Tragedy and comedy stand side by side in perfect equality.
