Ariodante - Music Theater at the Vienna

The opera composer Georg Friedrich Handel began a new chapter in his work with his opera Ariodante. The story revolves around the Scottish princess Ginevra, who is loved by both the knight Ariodante and the duke Polinesso, taking place in the medieval period, which had not previously played a role in Handel's works. Musically, the composer also ventured into new territory with the opera, which premiered in 1735: After his expensive Italian singing stars had migrated in droves to the newly founded Opera of the Nobility, Handel shifted his focus from the vocal virtuosity of his soloists to a more musically profound portrayal of his characters.
