But even the newly rented shared basement apartment becomes a test of nerves, as a subway tunnel is being blasted underground in Greenwich Village. The naive Eileen, who wants to enter show business, is pursued by a string of admirers, while the level-headed Ruth tries to carve out a place for herself in the literary scene of the metropolis. After many ups and downs, both of them, of course, await a happy ending – albeit one with surprises.
The musical multi-talent Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story, On The Town) developed this musical homage to vibrant New York in 1953 with his team in just a few weeks and hit the jackpot with the combination of over-the-top comedy, a jazzy, energetic score, and captivating dance numbers. Just three years later, Wonderful Town premiered at the Vienna Volksoper, making it one of the first musicals ever performed in the German-speaking world.
