Faith Love Hope

Elisabeth is among Horváth's young women who does not let her head hang low. When asked about her profession, she says, "Right now, I actually have nothing." And: "It’s supposed to get even worse. But I won’t let my head hang." To pay the fine for peddling without a trade license, she tries to sell her corpse to the university anatomy department. But they don’t pay for corpses; they already have enough of them. While the job market offers nothing, various men come along who offer to support Elisabeth. However, the first one reports her, and the next one leaves her hanging. Elisabeth learns what one gets for not letting their head hang low.

With the intention of writing a piece about an "everyday case" to illustrate "once again the gigantic struggle between the individual and society" through the "bureaucratically irresponsible application of small paragraphs," Ödön von Horváth, together with Lukas Kristl, wrote the "little dance of death" Faith Love Hope in 1932.
