The dating of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto for Anton Stadler is not clear, as his catalog does not record a specific date. However, a letter to his wife Constanze dated October 7/8, 1791 provides some clues. In it, Mozart describes his daily routine, which included billiards, coffee, and pipe smoking, as well as orchestrating the rondo for Stadler. This letter offers insight into Mozart's everyday life and shows how he utilized creative breaks. Speaking of breaks: The fermatas in Mozart's concerto invite soloists to interrupt the flow and interpret freely – very much in the spirit of Baroque improvisation.
