Thank you very much for joining us on this small excursion into a prehistoric time that was just recently the present. In Daniel Kehlmann's latest play, a commissioned work for the Theater in der Josefstadt, the writer takes a satirical look at a society in a state of emergency. The Easter festival five years ago was closely linked by politics to the hope for the resurrection of a society that was then in its first lockdown. In his play, Kehlmann embarks on absurdly Kafkaesque paths of countless regulations, poetically and surrealistically examining the human experience in quarantine, and exploring how the pandemic changed society. With a sharp eye on human weaknesses, Easter is a darkly humorous piece about control and isolation, the insistence on principles, and the question of responsibility. Daniel Kehlmann is among the most successful contemporary German-speaking authors. After The Mentor, Christmas Eve, and The Journey of the Lost, Easter is already Kehlmann's fourth world premiere at the Theater in der Josefstadt. His work on the play began in the spring of 2020 as an immediate reaction to the outbreak of the pandemic and has accompanied the author up to the present day.
