The world is set up in a completely foolish way. At forty, one should become young; then one would actually have something to gain from it. A man is unfaithful. His wife knows it. They do not speak about it. She has decided to punish him "only" through increasing distance. Then a close family friend dies: rumors circulate. Did he take his own life out of love for that very betrayed woman? Because she rejected him? The husband can no longer endure the virtue of his wife, which he perceives as heartlessness. He leaves, going to the mountains, to another woman. Disappointed and alienated, his wife also begins an affair. How can he cope with her infidelity? Arthur Schnitzler allows life models and life lies to collide in his classic work. What does love mean? What does marriage mean? What role do fidelity and jealousy play?
