Austria's most innovative Gypsy-Balkan band detonates like an avalanche in the ears and dance feet of their listeners. The virtuoso instrumentalists navigate through all conceivable music genres with wonderfully crafted arrangements, delivering a concert evening that invites you to listen, marvel, and jump for joy. Anyone who loves folk, rock, hip hop, swing, Balkan music, and much more will feel right at home here. The Gewürztraminer play what they feel like and impressively demonstrate how music can connect people.
The Gewürztraminer have become an integral part of the Vienna music scene over the past few years. With their innovative songs, which have always been a melting pot of cultures, they have performed at many festivals and concert venues in Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Hungary. Now the band is back with a new album, once again setting new standards. The Viennese background of the Gypsy-Balkan band comes more to the forefront, and the lyrics and music create a spectrum ranging from extremely danceable to melancholic. The production sounds fresh, cheeky, and modern. One can find an acoustic techno track about global warming alongside the Viennese waltz "Es gheat vü mehr gschmust," with the simple call to give more love, regardless of origin, job, or orientation.
Of course, humor is not neglected with the Gewürztraminer. They continue to play with wordplay and the lyrics provoke thought and smiles. There's an entire song about the band's joy in the rustic card game Schnapsen, as well as one about a Balkan man who sacrifices everything to buy a Mercedes. The title "Bodn gehn" expresses longing and desire for summer freedom and post-corona lockdown trauma, wrapped in a typical pop music relationship drama.
Stylistically, as always, it’s a mix of everything. It opens with the Big Band dance hit "Bussi Bussi BB," followed by a hip hop poser song that, in the tradition of old rap, boasts about the superiority of one's own performance and music, of course with a classic Gewürztraminer wink. Various themes take turns, resulting in a versatile album. A definite treat for all Gypsy and Balkan music fans and those who want to become one.
