An overbearing nobleman and his cunning servant, a steadfast countess and her clever maid, a pubescent young man, and more or less skilled schemers: The panopticon of characters in Le nozze di Figaro primarily presents a social portrait of the 18th century – and yet every viewer can recognize themselves in at least one of the figures drawn with keen psychological insight.

The comedy is as simply complicated as "real life": Count Almaviva loves Susanna, the chambermaid of Countess Rosina Almaviva, who still loves the Count and can no longer tolerate his affairs.
