With BOCCACCIO, Franz von Suppè has created one of the best operettas in history. This piece shines in all its components. Alongside an endless wealth of musical highlights, sophistication, and exuberance, there is the witty and humorous libretto by Friedrich Zell and Richard Genée. Medieval Florence is in turmoil, and the notorious poet Boccaccio is to blame. With his tales about the free-spirited love lives of Florentine women, he drives the venerable gentlemen of the city to the barricades, while the women readily succumb to the poet's charm. Soon, however, the daring title character finds himself in a romantic adventure that promises more than just material for the next novella. While the angry crowd publicly burns his works, Boccaccio has lost his heart to the most beautiful of all Florentine women. This operetta is a "triumph piece" that leaves nothing to be desired.
