To escape her persistent admirers, Countess Mariza flees to her estate in Hungary and into an engagement with the fictitious Count Zsupán. When the imaginary suitor suddenly appears very much in reality and joyfully wants to abduct his beloved to Varasdin, the cheerful emotional chaos begins. A poor, mysterious estate manager, also in love with the Countess, then completely disrupts the tranquil Hungarian countryside life. Accompanying this hilarious yet deeply touching storyline is Kálmán's fabulous music, a true fireworks display of rapid Csárdás, unforgettable evergreens, and lively hits – in short, a grand operetta classic in red, white, and green.
