In contrast to the traditional structure of the Requiem, and especially to the compositions of Hector Berlioz and Giuseppe Verdi, Fauré avoids a dramatic portrayal of the Dies irae and limits himself to setting its final verse, the Pie Jesu, to music. In addition, he included the In paradisum from the Exequies, which is traditionally played during the transfer of the body from the church to the cemetery. Overall, Fauré aimed to create a peaceful image of death. In many passages, minor sounds from the choir and orchestra glide into atmospheric major chords, offering a comforting glimpse of the heavenly realm.
