"Dream Story"

In 1925, Arthur Schnitzler's "Dream Story" was published chapter by chapter in the literary magazine "Die losen Blätter," which was included with the Berlin fashion magazine "Die Dame." One hundred years later, the novella will be staged at the Volkstheater under the direction of Johanna Wehner. The premiere is on October 31, 2025.

Arthur Schnitzler began writing his "Dream Story" in 1907 about a seemingly harmonious marriage filled with unfulfilled erotic desires and secret dreams, but he only completed it after the end of his own marriage in 1925. In it, Schnitzler narrates the strange events of one night and the following day. After a lavish masked ball and a passionate night of love, Albertine and Fridolin reveal to each other their secret longings from before their marriage. Disturbed by this, Fridolin wanders through the night in Vienna the next evening. He sneaks into a villa on the outskirts of the city, where a ritual celebration of eroticism is held under strict discretion. His experience, along with the dream Albertine recounts in the morning, shakes the certainties of their bourgeois existence and threatens to destroy their marriage...

Director Johanna Wehner, known for her precise, highly musical theatrical works, tells in her interpretation of "Dream Story" about people who have settled comfortably into their bourgeois existence and whose lives are suddenly invaded by something foreign and threatening. Is it themselves?

Following the revival of "Fräulein Else" (by Leonie Böhm and Julia Riedler, nominated twice for the Nestroy Prize 2025), "Dream Story" is now the second evening from the pen of Arthur Schnitzler on the stage of the Volkstheater at Arthur-Schnitzler-Platz 1.
