The Canadian border crossers of the post-rock masterpiece are returning - as consistent as they are unconventional: Godspeed You! Black Emperor (GY!BE) defend their long-held stance against the economic exploitation of artists through streaming and prioritize artistic integrity. In 2025, they removed almost their entire catalog from major platforms - a political decision with symbolic power.
With their latest album "No Title As Of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead" (2024), they are rethinking boundaries and opening spaces for new sounds. This music is almost a manifesto, a sonic ecstasy, a resistance against digital consumer culture.
Since their founding in Montreal in the 1990s, GY!BE have defined their own genre with their epic, cinematic forms of instrumental chamber and guitar music. Classics like "f#a#" (1997) and "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" (2000) are considered milestones in pop history.
Their live performances, on the other hand, create their own cinema - with layered 16 mm film projections, collages of analog materials, and a visual aesthetic that makes physically understandable what is being negotiated in the mind.
In nearly 25 years of band history, GY!BE have released only two official band photos, give few interviews, and consistently refuse social media or video productions. Their music, their work is meant to speak for itself.
The new album comes at a time when artistic stance is beginning to be heard again: against the plundering by streaming corporations, for a decelerated yet deeper engagement with sound, emotion, and political consciousness. GY!BE are one of the most impressive post-capitalist sound laboratories of our time.
