Joseph Roth's "Radetzky March," first published in 1932, is a literary monument to the glory and decline of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The title refers to the famous military march by Johann Strauss the Elder, composed 84 years earlier in honor of Field Marshal Joseph Wenzel Count Radetzky of Radetz – the commander who suppressed the Italian Revolution in 1848 and became a symbol of the imperial army. Roth's novel tells the story of the Trotta family, who serve the Emperor faithfully over generations – until their world shatters with the changing times. In the podium version with Johannes Silberschneider, word and music merge into an atmospheric narrative between memory and transience. The idea arose from the successful collaboration between Silberschneider and MiGro in their program on Roth's "Kapuzinergruft." MiGro (cello and piano) once again took on the dramatic adaptation and selected musical pieces from the time of the novel – by Philipp Scharwenka, Nikolai Potolovsky, Reinhold Glière, and Friedrich Kiel. An evening full of sound, word, and history – inspired by the fading world of Joseph Roth.
