Forstpark 1, 4801 Traunkirchen

On the evening of January 5th, the last night of the Rauhnächte, one of the most impressive winter traditions of the Salzkammergut, the Glöcklerlaufen, takes place in Traunkirchen.

As darkness falls, the Glöckler gather in groups called "Passen" at their meeting points throughout the village to begin their run.

The attire of a Glöckler includes white clothing, bells, and of course, the Glöckler cap, which can weigh up to 15 kilograms. Each Glöckler cap is a small work of art in itself. It consists of a mostly geometric framework made of thin wooden sticks, onto which black cardboard is applied.

On this paper, motifs and ornaments are drawn beforehand, which are then painstakingly cut out and punched. Finally, the motifs are backed with colorful tissue paper on the inside, and candles are mounted to illuminate the designs from within. Each runner spends several hundred hours of work on their cap.

Each group is led by a precursor who wears a turban and carries a shepherd's staff. From the Mühlbachberg, far out from the Mühlbachtal, the village center, as well as from Viechtau and Mitterndorf, they run towards their common goal. At certain houses and squares, they perform figure eights, and the families there invite them for a small refreshment. The Glöckler express their gratitude with New Year's wishes and by singing Christmas and nativity songs. At 10 PM, all groups meet for a communal singing. At a signal, all groups enter with a deep ringing of bells, forming a huge circle, while the lead singers of each group step into the center and begin traditional nativity songs. The light from the Glöckler caps and the deep sound of the bells are meant to drive away evil spirits and attract good spirits, symbolizing the victory of light over the darkness of winter.
